Teck pays up to re-sign workers

As a result of the deal, the Vancouver-based miner expects to incur a one-time, after-tax $C4 million charge to its profit in the 2012 third-quarter.

88ֳ $1 million of the charge will be a non-cash accrual.

“Discussions with the United Mineworkers of America Local 1656 were collaborative,” Cardinal River operations general manager Mark Brown said.

“We are very pleased to have a new five-year agreement.”

Teck’s Cardinal River complex includes the Luscar and Cheviot truck-and-shovel mines which produce mostly metallurgical coal with an annual capacity of 2 million tons per annum.

Cardinal River is located near Alberta’s Jasper National Park and the historic town site of Mountain Park.

At 2011 production rates, Teck estimates a mine life of 28 years for the site.
