The company said mines should make sure the right safety helmet for each situation/working environment was chosen; that the safety helmet fits correctly; and that safety helmets should be correctly maintained to last for the expected period of time.

The company supplies solid colour and fluorescent safety helmets, ideal for visibility in low light working environments such as underground mining.

“One thing to keep in mind is the fact that the colour pigments used in the manufacture of fluorescent safety helmets are not as resistant to solar radiation or chemicals in comparison to the range of solid colour safety helmets,” Protector said.

Effectively this means that fluorescent helmets may deteriorate more quickly than solid colour helmets when exposed to sunlight and other sources of UV radiation or harsh chemicals such as petroleum products, paint, adhesives, aerosol sprays or harsh cleaning agents.

“Protector Technologies advises people to only choose high visibility safety helmets using fluorescent colours in an indoor and low light environment, where exposure to UV light is minimised or where these chemicals are not found.”

To ensure the maximum level of safety the company said underground workers should watch for indications of when to replace a helmet. This would include if the helmet has had a significant impact, though it may not have obvious damage; the outer shell has dents, splits or cracking; or the outer shell has excessively faded or is dull looking (compared to inner surface).

Harnesses should be replaced every two years, or earlier if parts are broken or badly soiled.
