The model coal mine methane mitigation project in North America will take place at Jim Walter Resources' No. 7 operation in Brookwood.
Biothermica said Monday it had received the green light from the US Mine Safety and Health Administration to proceed with the project.
"Biothermica will use its VAMOX regenerative thermal oxidation system to destroy ventilation air methane before this potent GHG is released to the atmosphere," the company said. "This demonstration project will achieve GHG emission reductions of some 40,000 tons of CO2 equivalent (tCO2e) annually."
President Guy Drouin said the project positions Biothermica as a "pioneer of GHG mitigation initiatives" and marks the milestone as the first VAM oxidation effort at an American coal mine.
"Our project will also be the first in the world to generate an income stream based on the selling of carbon credits resulting from VAM destruction."
According to the company, VAM from underground operations constitute 60% to 70% of GHG emissions.
"Historically considered as waste, ventilation air can now turn into a valuable asset that can be sold as carbon credits on the market," said Jim Walter Resources mining engineering general manager Thomas McNider.
"Moreover, Biothermica's VAMOX requires no modification to our existing mine equipments and remains independent from our ventilation systems."
