Staples are commonly used to secure fittings in high-pressure fluid power systems of longwall mining equipment. The failure of a staple can cause a hose or fitting to fail or break loose, which has the potential to cause serious injury.
The Bucyrus Staple Retainer prevents both staple walk-out and fitting movement if a staple leg fails as the result of fatigue.
Tests have shown that even when staple legs break, the joint does not usually separate and the remainder of the staple stays in place. The staple retainer is designed to allow easy maintenance examination regimens allowing timely rectification of any problems.
Bucyrus currently offers four options to fit the staple sizes and fit both square and round connectors.
The staple retainer has been designed for easy installation; holds bow of the staple firmly in place; does not allow removal of the staple while the retainer is fitted; has holes for the staple legs to ensure correct installation, tension, and to facilitate examination of the staple; and is made of fire-resistant material.
Bucyrus is also working on an effective method to retain staples fitted in manifolds to ensure that all high-risk areas in the longwall are addressed.
The Bucyrus Staple Retainer is currently being manufactured and will be on the Australian market mid-May. It will be on display in July at the Queensland Mining and Engineering exhibition in Mackay.
