The incident involving the still-unnamed worker occurred about 6.20pm local time, confirmed US Mine Safety and Health Administration spokeswoman Amy Louviere to International Longwall News Thursday. The agency was notified immediately.

"The miner suffered a possible broken back, and possible broken shoulder. Paramedics came on the scene, and treated the miner underground," she said, adding that the individual was transported to a local hospital and is believed to be doing well.

West Virginia Office of Miners' Health, Safety and Training director Ron Wooten confirmed for local media just after the accident that a rock piece located at the intersection of the rib and roof apparently had fallen.

According to MSHA records, Newtown Energy has operated the bituminous complex in Comfort, Boone County since March 2000, and the mine produced just over 1.3 million tons of output last year.

While no fatalities have been reported at the mine since at least 1995, it has suffered 16 NFDL operator injuries this year to date, and 21 in 2006.

A state inspection of the incident has commenced.
