The explosion occurred in an underground coal mine in the Kemerovo region, 3000km east of Moscow on Thursday night last week.

Dow Jones reported 31 miners were underground at the time of the accident.

Russia ranks as one of the top five most dangerous countries for underground coal miners. Methane and coal dust explosions, as well as underground fires, remain the main causes of coal mine accidents.

Inadequate ventilation systems is one of the biggest challenges facing the industry, with the country's fan systems described as being in a state of disrepair and operating in violation of safety standards.
