The Integrated District Maintenance Scheme (IDMS) was introduced as part of Project 105 and stems from the acknowledgement the skills of fitters and electricians are best focused on the more detailed work for which they have been trained.
Project 105 was introduced in 2002 and aims to reduce unit costs.
Since IDMS’s introduction, face potential measured over a six-week period has lifted to 42.3%, with a best weekly performance of 25,830 tonnes.
An emphasis has been placed on production teams designing their own schedule to help maintain the district, which has seen equipment delays reduced from 30% to 9.6%.
Teams earmark Wednesday for maintenance and they work through check lists, ticking off what they’ve done – the number of pick replaced and sprays changed… that they’ve checked the shearer shoes and the radio handset.
With the scheme in place availability is now 43.8% and utilisation has risen to 70.9% since May.
Harworth longwall is located in the village of Bircotes nine miles south of Doncaster, and began production in 1924. Investment of around £15m to open up new reserves is planned for 2004/5.
