A fire retardant, anti-static plastic (FRAS) conductive pipe system was designed to overcome static build-up by allowing the charge to be earthed safely. GF-FRAS pipes provide the combined benefit of conductivity and resistance to fire propagation.

The properties of GF-FRAS piping systems have since allowed them to be used in applications including fireproof conduits and methane vent hoses.

The GF-FRAS pipe system has been certified and approved by the NSW Department of Industry. The pressure grade system has widened the scope of applications to include:

Water distribution systems

Gas transfer systems

Pneumatic piping (compressed air)

GF-FRAS PE80 based piping systems are available in pressure classifications, based on a 15-year design life. Hydrostatic design pressures to PN16 can be achieved using a design factor of 1.5 in sizes to 125mm (outside diameter).

GF-FRAS pipe is manufactured to comply with the requirements specified in both Australian Standard AS1180.10B (combustion propagation characteristics), Australian Standard AS 1180.13A (electrical resistance to hose), and Australian Standard AS 2660 (hose and hose assemblies for air and water in underground mines).

The oxygen index of the pipe material was determined as per AS 2122.2 (determination of minimum oxygen concentration for flame propagation).

GF-FRAS pipes are also used as a protective cover for roller conveyors where the static charge build-up from the belt can be transferred through the roller cover and earthed appropriately.

Away from mining applications, GF-FRAS has also been used as a cable tie wrap in hazardous areas such as airport fuel lines for planes, and even pipe-work housing in motor vehicles and machinery.

In addition to supplying FRAS piping systems, Georg Fischer is a leading supplier of other plastic piping systems throughout the world.

The company provides customer focused solutions by offering leak-free, durable and corrosion-free plastic piping systems.

“Our jointing technology, fittings, valves, measuring devices and pipes are used for water conveyance and treatment, as well as the transport of liquids and gases for industrial and mining applications,” the company said.

“So next time you are about to make a decision regarding your critical fluid transport systems, we invite you to consider having the advantages of international expertise, experience and support behind you.”
