“We’re starting preliminary environmental monitoring now,” said ICG’s senior vice president of mining services Gene Kitts.
The year-old company, which is in the process of moving its headquarters from Ashland, Kentucky, to Charleston, West Virginia, anticipates having about 190 million tons of coal reserves on its 65,000 acres of property at Knottsville, south-east of Grafton. The mine, expected to produce about 4Mt of coal annually, could provide jobs for up to 350 people.
Construction could commence in 2007 on the mine and its accompanying preparation plant, designed to process up to 2000 tons per hour. It will become ICG’s second active operation in the state, joining the Birch River mine near Cowen.
Kitts said ICG held an open house event last month to discuss the plans with residents of the area.
“We’ve received nothing but encouragement from most everyone we’ve talked with in regard to this investment in Taylor County,” he said. “It is creating quite a bit of excitement.
In addition to the Birch River mine, ICG also operates coal outfits in Kentucky, Illinois, Pennsylvania and Maryland. The company is owned by New York billionaire Wilbur Ross, who purchased a majority of Horizon Natural Resources as part of Horizon’s bankruptcy proceedings last year.
