The China Daily reports that as of 7am yesterday local time the water level at the Huayuan Mine where 172 miners are trapped had dropped by 25.58m to 67.02m.
Rescue headquarters told media the 14 nearest miners are trapped 208m below the surface and water is being pumped out at more than 1500 cubic metres per hour.
The mines, located at Xintai, flooded after heavy rainfalls caused the nearby Wenhe River to swell and tear a breach in the levee.
Mine officials have declined to confirm whether the disaster was a result of a natural disaster or human error, instead focusing on the rescue effort that has been amplified by 85 relatives of the trapped miners falling sick because of grief and requiring medial attention.
Mine managers have dispatched 134 medical workers and hundreds of employees to treat and counsel the trapped miners’ families as rescue efforts continue.
Experts have predicted grim forecasts for the rescue effort, saying that if water is pumped out at 5000cu.m an hour it would take 100 days to drain the pit.
