UK publication Guardian Limited reported the Medway Council said it would defer its final vote on the station until committee members were able to visit the site at Kingsnorth, in Kent, and obtain enough information to make a decision they were comfortable with.
The ₤1 billion project seeks to replace existing coal-fired stations at the site with new units that will produce fewer emissions and be more efficient than the existing operations.
However, the station has been targeted heavily by environmentalists during its approval process, with 50 Greenpeace protesters chaining themselves to machinery at the plant last month in protest.
Guardian Limited said if approved the station will utilise carbon capture technology and heat generated by the plant to power an additional 100,000 homes in the area.
