According to a Reuters report the president of the Zimbabwe Chamber of Mines, Ian Saunders, held a meeting with government officials late last week to seek clarification on a statement by the country's president, Robert Mugabe, that the state wanted control of the mining industry.
Saunders said he was told that 50% was not "a definite number" but that Mugabe wanted to see the industry "moving to that number."
Zimbabwe was proposing a law earlier this year which would have seen a transfer of 49% ownership to black Zimbabweans. This was later withdrawn.
It now appears that the 50% target has not faded completely. Saunders said the Chamber's target was 25% black ownership within 10 years.
