The 370km pipeline will deliver gas from the Moranbah coal seam methane production field to the Yabulu power station near Townsville, which is currently being upgraded from a 160-megawatt open cycle gas turbine fuelled by aviation fuel to a 220MW combined cycle coal seam gas turbine plant. It is due for completion in February 2005.
Speaking at the pipeline's official opening ceremony, premier Peter Beattie said the pipeline would help develop new commercial and industrial development in the region.
"The completion of the pipeline is a major milestone so that next year we will see Queensland's significant reserves of coal seam methane gas put to very good use," he said.
The pipeline, constructed, owned and operated by government-owned company, Enertrade, will be initially configured to provide 20 petajoules, but had the potential to generate about 50PJ a year.
"Enertrade officials say the pipeline has the potential to create more than $1 billion in industrial development in the north, potentially creating thousands of jobs," he said.
