The blast triggered an explosion at the neighbouring Shapingzi Coal Mine that killed six more people, according to reports by China Daily.

Officials are investigating the cause of Friday's blast at the Hougou coal mine, a government-owned operation.

Meanwhile, by yesterday rescuers had discovered 40 bodies at the site of the Nuan'erhe coal mine blast that occurred Thursday in north China's Hebei Province, with 10 miners still missing.

Of 85 miners working underground at the time of the explosion 34 were brought to safety.
