On January 2, Appin Road – close to BHP’s West Cliff mine – was closed and BHP withdrew its workers from the mine as a precautionary measure.

BHP sustainable development general manager Wendy Tyrrell said a combination of professional advice, a comprehensive internal bushfire management plan and a precautionary withdrawal of workers from the mine had all contributed to keeping people and property safe not only during the threat, but throughout the summer bushfire season.

“West Cliff Colliery has a comprehensive management plan dealing with bushfires, which was reviewed and updated early this spring (in advance of the bushfire season),” she said.

“Illawarra Coal and West Cliff management would like to thank the professional work of all those involved, including employees, contractors, the police, fire service and volunteers, for ensuring everyone's safety and also the minimisation of damage to West Cliff property and the surrounding area.”
