An underground fire erupted Thursday, January 19 near the mine’s longwall conveyor belt drive. Heavy smoke from the fire hindered evacuation efforts and caused two of 12 evacuating miners to be separated from the group.
Despite efforts to locate and rescue them, the two miners perished and their bodies were recovered from the operation on January 21.
MSHA recently issued the following best practices:
All accumulated combustible material shall be removed;
Equipment shall always be kept in a safe operating condition;
Thorough conveyor belt examinations should be performed;
Operations must ensure that hazardous conditions are immediately corrected; and
When an alarm sounds, treat it as a fire alert until proven otherwise, and the cause of any indication of fire shall be investigated immediately.
The agency has also asked that suggestions for prevention of such accidents in the future be submitted through their site and submission authors may remain anonymous.
