No injuries were reported after the braking mechanism on the 24-ton capacity hoist failed to unload a skip at the surface, causing it to fall about 1600ft back to the bottom of the shaft. At the same time, the attached empty skip surged upward and struck the hoist device before also falling to the bottom of the shaft as well.
A damage assessment is now being conducted on the skips, hoist ropes and hoist mechanism housed within the mine shaft; the analysis is expected to take several days and repairs could take several weeks.
Approximately 200 mine employees, according to a Consol Energy statement, would be laid off while assessments were performed and repairs made.
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania-based Consol Energy is the largest high-Btu coal producer in the US. The Buchanan mine produces some 350,000-400,000 tons of low-volume met coal monthly.
Consol said it would send a written communication to the mine’s customers announcing the incident and intended to invoke the force majeure provision of its sales contracts during Buchanan’s stoppage.
